Our seas and waterways as of late become dangerous to shipping because of militancy and piracy. Most shipping lines are reluctant to come to Nigeria due to delays at our entry ports which made them sitting ducks for such criminals. Some of these delays are caused by the lack of serviceable pilot and tug boats to guide the vessels into port, lack of fast security patrol boats and general delay with the process of entry and exit at the ports due to manual processing of containers and goods. Since the September 11th, the threat of terrorist activities and the emergence of piracy have made port top priorities for every type of security counter-measure. The need for security has complicated the process of getting containers and other goods from our seaports. Today, the security levels at our ports are never below level tow.
However, seaports and transportation hubs operations are not environmentally conducive for massive security screening because of their vast areas and the heavy human vehicular and materials traffic within. Nonetheless, following Nigeria’s signing on to the ISPS (International Shipping and Port Safety) code in 2005, the Federal Government through its Ministry of Transport accepts no excuse for slipshod at her seaports.
We are capable of solving this problem by providing electronic access gates and biometric control system which would give our ports and cargo terminals real-time security cover. This would be able to control both human and material influx into these security sensitive areas and have on record, the movement of containers and other goods to aid tracking.
